Corridor Management Plan

In conjunction with the improvement planning process, ADOT has prepared a Corridor Management Plan (CMP) for SR 179 from Milepost 302.5 (Dry Beaver Creek) to Milepost 310.0 (Back-O-Beyond Road), which is known as the state-designated Red Rock Scenic Road.

The CMP is a community-based document that outlines the vision for management of the scenic road. The CMP is the next step toward achieving National Scenic Byway designation for this portion of SR 179.

Arizona’s Scenic Roads program is funded largely by the Federal Highway Administration in coordination with the National Scenic Byways program (www.byways.org). Currently, 17 scenic roads are undergoing CMP throughout the state. There currently is one National Scenic Byway in Arizona, the Kaibab Plateau-North Rim Parkway. Three other state scenic roads are due to be nominated for National Byway Designation in the upcoming round. The benefits of National Designation include promotion, preservation, partnerships, and pride.

An important part of the CMP is the formation of a community-based action team charged with implementing the vision, goals and action plans outlined in the CMP in coordination with the Needs Based Implementation Plan process conducted August 2003 through November 2004.

Additional information about the state scenic roads program can be obtained at www.azdot.gov and www.arizonascenicroads.com.
