Welcome to the State Route (SR) 179 Project Weekly Construction Update - your electronic connection to the SR 179 Project with the most current information on construction plans and activities.

Please note: Changes to construction plans can happen frequently due to weather, equipment availability and personnel issues. We try to anticipate construction activities a week in advance but changes may occur. Intermittent lane closures, with short delays, may not always be known in advance.

What to watch for, week of December 11:

SR179 Construction

South of the Village of Oak Creek, motorists will notice construction of a retaining wall on the east side of the road, and, further north, work on the storm drain system. There may be minor traffic impacts such as shoulder closures or construction vehicles needing access to the road, or lane closures of short durations with flaggers/DPS present.

Jacks Canyon Road is closed between SR 179 and Cortez for storm drain work and will be closed until further notice due to unforeseen utility conflicts and the upcoming Yavapai County project on Jacks Canyon Road.  Drivers using detour routes must obey speed limits.  Tickets are being issued in residential areas where detour traffic has been traveling at higher than posted speeds.

Throughout the Village of Oak Creek, the construction work zone has been secured behind concrete barrier and existing sidewalks, asphalt, curb and gutter, etc. are being removed.  One lane of traffic continues to flow in each direction.  Watch for blue “business access” signs to guide you, and please drive with care through the area.

Work on a new bridge in the forest segment is ongoing near milepost 309.5, and there may be lane closures of short durations with flaggers/DPS present.  The HT Trail will be closed until Spring 2007, also associated with construction of a new bridge.

SR179 ConstructionStorm drain work will continue at Back O Beyond, where traffic has shifted to the west side of the road. Temporary concrete barrier is installed to help traffic flow. There may be intermittent lane closures with flaggers/DPS present.

Plant salvage and survey operations are ongoing with no traffic impacts.

Safety

It is important to remember to stay away from the big pipes, ditches and the construction equipment. These could be particularly tempting to children on holiday break. The storm drainage pipes are up to 96” wide and the crews are excavating and digging trenches more than 20 feet deep to install the pipes. Excavation sites are being barricaded with temporary fence. Please discourage children –and adults—from exploring around the fencing and trenches.

Other ADOT News

A project to repair the I-17 bridge over the Verde River (milepost 287.7 to 288.3) located north of Camp Verde will begin Tuesday, December 12. Northbound I-17 traffic will be shifted to use one travel lane and the shoulder through this area. On December 12 and 13, temporary lane closures will take place during daylight hours while crews re-stripe and set concrete barrier to secure the construction zone. All on and off ramps will remain open during this work. For up to date information on the Verde River Bridge project call the construction hotline at 800-340-5240.
