Cortez to be Closed for Work on Roundabout

Crews are planning to close Cortez on the west side of SR 179 in the Village early the week of December 10 to work on the roundabout intersection there. Detours will be clearly marked.

Driveway Work North of Cortez

New driveways have been installed from the south end of the project up to Cortez in the Village.  Crews will continue to move north with the driveway work.  Businesses with more than one driveway will always have at least one driveway open, while businesses that only have one driveway will have their new driveway built one half at a time.  As always, all business access remains open.

Turning Movements in Roundabout Intersections

Please remember that you must yield to cars on the left when approaching a roundabout intersection.  The traffic within the circle has the right of way, and similar to any other intersection, drivers should signal as they approach the intersection (about 100 feet in advance) to indicate their intention .

Status Update on Underground Work

Although a roadway is a linear facility, it is not built in a linear fashion.  In fact, roadway projects are built from the bottom up, and the SR 179 project includes a great deal of underground work.  Nearly 75% of the construction project is underground work. For Project 1, 100% of the underground work is complete on the east side of the road, and 75% is complete on the west side, an indication that the project is in its later phases.  We currently are in month 14 of the 18-month project.

Progress in Forest

The new southbound alignment in the Forest is being paved intermittently when paving activities are not underway in the Village.  Paving of the new southbound alignment is more than two-thirds of the way complete (from Bell Rock north to near the HT bridge).

City of Sedona Business and Resident Forums

The City of Sedona and Sedona Chamber of Commerce, with ADOT’s cooperation, are presenting Business and Resident Forums this month to introduce the Sedona community to the construction of Project 2 within the City of Sedona limits.  Please plan to join us Tuesday, December 11 at the Church of the Red Rocks (SR 179 and Bowstring Drive) for a Business Forum from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. or a Resident Forum from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.  The forums are open to all, and the same information is being presented each time.

Please note: Changes to construction plans can happen frequently due to weather, equipment availability and personnel issues. We try to anticipate construction activities a week in advance but changes may occur. Intermittent lane closures, with short delays, may not always be known in advance.
