What to Watch for Week of November 5
Detours for Major Progress in the Village

Meandering sidewalks through the Village of Oak Creek. |
This week crews in the Village will be building the west halves of the roundabouts at Jack's Canyon, Cortez, Castle Rock, and Bell Rock Boulevard. The Ridge Trail Roundabout will be built on the east (Avenida de Piedras) side first. To accomplish this work quickly, crews will need to close the associated side roads one at a time and detour traffic. Ridge Trail and Jack's Canyon work may be conducted simultaneously for expedience.
Each side road closure should last one to two weeks, barring any unforeseen circumstances. Business access will remain open, two-way traffic on SR 179 is being maintained, and detour routes will be clearly marked.
ADOT representatives walked door-to-door and provided written notice to the businesses on the west side of SR 179 on Friday, November 2. We appreciate the cooperation and patience of these businesses, as crews are working very hard to complete work in the Village business district within the next few weeks.
Paving the Forest
The new southbound alignment through the Forest is taking shape. With paving underway, the road is being prepared for a traffic switch late this year. At that time, two-way traffic will be traveling on the new road, and work will commence on the complete re-build of the existing route through the forest.
When the project is complete, northbound traffic will travel on the newly constructed existing alignment (where traffic travels currently), and southbound traffic will travel on the new alignment. Separating thes two travel lanes will provide a safe, relaxing travel experience for motorists enjoying the beauty of the forest segment. The travel lanes will be 12 feet wide, and 8-foot shoulders will accomodate bicycle traffic and allow room for emergency vehicles to pass. Curb and gutter will define the roadway edges and discourage motorists from pulling off the side of the road illegally as they do today, and new scenic pullouts will provide ample parking and opportunities for spectacular views.
Project 2 News
Qwest has mobilized to the area of Project 2 for the final round of utility relocations prior to the start of the Project 2 Construction project. The contract for Project 2 has been awarded to Southwest Asphalt Paving, the same contractor that currently is working to complete Project 1. Having the contractor already in the area and familiar with the project will benefit the overall project, which is anticipated to be complete in late 2009 or early 2010.
ADOT representatives are contacting Project 2 businesses and beginning to meet with them about the upcoming project. Also, ADOT, the City of Sedona, and the Sedona Chamber of Commerce are meeting regularly to coordinate and prepare. Watch for more news about Project 2 and associated business and public communication activities coming soon.
Please note: Changes to construction plans can happen frequently due to weather, equipment availability and personnel issues. We try to anticipate construction activities a week in advance but changes may occur. Intermittent lane closures, with short delays, may not always be known in advance.
