Welcome to the State Route (SR) 179 Project Weekly Construction Update - your electronic connection to the SR 179 Project with the most current information on construction plans and activities.
Special Note on 89A Traffic:
Use Two Lanes Up to Merge Point for Better Traffic Flow
ADOT has received many calls and inquiries about the merge condition on SR 89A approaching the Y from West Sedona. The placement, spacing, and sequencing of signage and other devices is dictated at the state and federal level by the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and deviation from those standards is not allowable. ADOT is doing everything possible to make adjustments within MUTCD standards to assist with traffic flow.
Motorists will notice efforts to improve the situation over the next weeks as signage will be adjusted and law enforcement personnel will actively assist. An additional northbound lane will be open in the next two to three weeks that will be dedicated to right hand turns on to Brewer, that, along with Ranger, can be used as an access to SR 179.
Traffic will flow better if both lanes are used (rather than assembling early into the single left lane) all the way up to the merge point. At the merge point, vehicles should alternate one at a time from each lane into the one-lane section.
What to Watch for Week of June 16
Brewer Roundabout - South Half Nearing Completion
Communication about Plans for Y Construction
Gas Line Installation Y to Ranger
Foundation Structures for New Pedestrian Bridge at Oak Creek
Sidewalk and Curb/Gutter - Mallard to Oak Creek
Night Work Continues for Utility Crossings
Brewer Roundabout - South Half Nearing Completion
The Brewer roundabout is taking shape and projected to be complete and functioning by the end of the month. The south half will be completed first, followed by the north half.

Once the Brewer roundabout is complete, access out of the Post Office will change. Those wishing to exit the Post Office and head towards Uptown or SR 179 will take a right out of the Post Office and proceed around the roundabout to make a u-turn towards Uptown. A diagram is being prepared and will be provided to the Post Office and their customers for information.
Communication about Plans for Y Construction
The contractor is finalizing the phasing plan for construction of the roundabout at the Y, which will be one of the more complex elements of this construction project. The sequencing plan is being designed to take as little time as possible at the Y. ADOT will launch an intensive communication campaign including meetings and presentations to the City of Sedona, publications with user-friendly graphics, media outreach, and personal visits with affected businesses to describe the plan and prepare the community for this phase of work.
The goal is to complete the Y intersection between July 4 and Labor Day. This will entail traffic impacts and will require community cooperation and patience. This must be done so traffic can continue to move in all directions and ultimately provide less inconvenience. We thank you in advance.
Gas Line Installation Y to Ranger
The storm drain is complete on the west side of SR 179 between the Y and Ranger. Gas line installation will commence now on the east side of the road and is anticipated to be complete in mid-July.
Foundation Structures for New Pedestrian Bridge at Oak Creek
Crews are pouring the foundation structures for the new pedestrian bridge, as pictured here. The new bridge has been built and is anticipated to be delivered to the area in mid July. This picture shows the bridge, built by Stinger Welding in Coolidge Arizona, awaiting delivery. Once the bridge is in place, pedestrians will have a pleasant area to traverse and observe the creek, and will be able to avoid vehicular traffic, which is safer for all.

Sidewalk and Curb/Gutter - Mallard to Oak Creek
Two-way traffic continues to flow within City limits south of the business district (south of Canyon) where work on retaining walls, underground box culverts, and utilities is ongoing. Traffic is shifted along this stretch to allow for work on the opposite side of the road. The community will notice installation of sidewalk and curb/gutter, which makes the roadway begin to visually take shape.
Night Work Continues for Utility Crossings
Night work will continue through the end of next week for utility work. Work starts at 9 pm and continues until 5 am, and the road is cleaned up and open by 6 am. Construction crews are working to place "laterals" (utility trenches that cross SR 179) for electric wires and storm drain. The crews are working between Garlands and Exposures and also at Arrow Drive and Chapel Drive. The work is being conducted at night to minimize traffic impacts and expedite the work.
Please note: Changes to construction plans can happen frequently due to weather, equipment availability and personnel issues. We try to anticipate construction activities a week in advance but changes may occur. Intermittent lane closures, with short delays, may not always be known in advance.
