Project 2

Night Work Y to Ranger

Crews will be working between 9 pm and 5 am starting Monday, June 2, 2008 between the Y and Ranger Road and also in the area of Brewer Road. The areas will be cleaned up and ready for traffic each morning by 6 am. There will be flaggers and other personnel on hand each night to help the crews and trucks maneuver with as little disturbance as possible.  The work will require light plants for safety.

Brewer Road Taking Shape

There is notable progress in the area of the Post Office and Brewer Road, where one retaining wall is nearly complete (phot top right)and the curb and gutter for the north half of the roundabout is in place (photo top left). When it comes time to make these grade adjustments, SR 89A will need to be reduced to one lane in each direction for some period of time.  The roundabout should be complete and functioning later this summer.

Interestingly, the road in this location will be raised up to an entirely different grade when complete, due to the fact that it needs to be leveled out to accommodate the roundabout intersection.  In this photo,  ADOT Project Manager Carl Burkhalter is pointing to the top of a large concrete basin. When the road is complete, the top of this basin will be at the road level.

Underground Work Continues Throughout Business District

Crews are working in multiple areas throughout the business district (Canyon to the Y) installing natural gas, sewer, storm drain, electrical and other utilities and structures. SR 179 contains a great deal of the public infrastructure that serves the entire Sedona community. Access to business remains open, and traffic continues to flow. Delays necessary for the movement of construction personnel and vehicles are to be expected. Thank you for your patience and support.

Underground Work and Structures South of Canyon

Storm drain and other underground work continues south of Canyon, and as underground structures are completed, roadway work commences. The new roadway configuration is visible in certain areas such as Morgan Road and just north of Juniper.

Completion of First Retaining Wall at Poco Diablo

The 700+ foot-long retaining wall near Poco Diablo also is nearing completion. This is a major structure and a completion milestone for the team. With the wall completed, crews can begin rough grade, sidewalk, and curb and gutter work on that side of the road. Eventually, traffic will be switched to that side of the road and work will begin across the street, including an excavation of the hillside in that location.

Project 1

Paving New Northbound Alignment Through Forest

Asphalt base material is being placed now in preparation for the start of paving next week.

Depending on material availability and weather, paving is scheduled to begin this week on the newly reconstructed northbound alignment through the Coconino National Forest. That new road will be open to traffic later this summer. At that time, the northbound and southbound travel lanes will be separated. When complete, the alignments through the forest will include bike lanes, passing lanes in select locations, and four new scenic pullouts. Stay tuned for news on the opening of this new alignment.

Special Notes from the City of Sedona

Broken Arrow Subdivision Overlay Work Continues

The City of Sedona is in the process of overlaying the streets in the Broken Arrow Subdivision (east of SR 179), the Broken Arrow Vista Subdivision and Navajo Trail with an expected completion date of June 6th, 2008. Affected streets include:

  • Morgan Road
  • Columbia Drive
  • Paramount Drive
  • Painted Canyon Drive
  • Pinon Court
  • Cypress Drive
  • Cypress Court
  • Juniper Way
  • Navajo Trail

Work hours are 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. May 27 through June 6. Residents should expect minor traffic delays with re-routing of traffic. Paving is scheduled for Monday through Wednesday, June 2 to June 4. Please note that this schedule is subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances and /or unavailability of asphalt. Brewer Brothers Contracting will perform the work. For questions, please contact Dan Neimy, Street Maintenance Superintendent, City of Sedona Public Works Department, at 204-7109.

Pavement Preservation Project Begins June 9th, 2008

The City of Sedona has scheduled a pavement preservation project to take place from Monday, June 9 through Thursday, June 12 between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Workers will be on site to direct traffic in the affected areas. Several Sedona neighborhoods are included in this project:

Coffee Pot Drive
Forest Road
Yavapino Estates Subdivision
Bell Rock Trail
Chimney Rock Trail
Red Rock Way
Red Rock Trail
Castle Rock Trail
Cathedral Rock Trai
l Cor D’Amor Subdivision
Navoti Drive
Cor D’Amor Circle
Ruby Drive
Kachina Subdivision
Kachina Drive
Kiva Drive Wickiup Drive
Walapai Drive
Kaibab Drive
Lolomi Drive
Moki Drive

Pavement preservation involves applying a material to recently paved roads to extend the service life of the pavement. The material is applied with a truck that sprays the material onto the roadway. Travel and parking on the roads will be restricted during the spraying time. Once the material is sprayed on the pavement, it takes about two hours to set. During the two hours after application, vehicular traffic will be restricted.

If traffic uses the road during this time, the material may track onto driveways and other off street surfaces. The City of Sedona will not be responsible for cleaning up any tracking that may occur. If tracking occurs, it can be removed by cleaning the area with GOJO, a waterless hand cleaner that can be purchased at local hardware stores.

The City realizes this project may cause inconveniences and appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation. Brewer Brothers Contracting of Sedona will be performing the work. For further information, please contact Dan Neimy, Street Maintenance Superintendent at 204-7109.

Please note: Changes to construction plans can happen frequently due to weather, equipment availability and personnel issues. We try to anticipate construction activities a week in advance but changes may occur. Intermittent lane closures, with short delays, may not always be known in advance.
