City of Sedona Uptown Crack Sealing Project

The City of Sedona will begin the process of crack sealing SR 89A from Forest Road to Apple Avenue in the Uptown area starting Monday, May 19.  Crack sealing involves applying hot rubber in cracks in the road surface to prevent further deterioration of the road.  Motorists will not encounter lane closures, but will encounter a lane shift as crews perform their work.  Minor traffic delays are possible, but not expected.  Work is scheduled to be complete by mid-afternoon on that day. Brewer Brothers Contracting will perform the work.  For questions, please contact Dan Neimy, Street Maintenance Superintendent, City of Sedona Public Works Department, at 204-7109.

Project 2

New Work

Temporary Re-Routing of Morgan Rd

A section of pavement on Morgan Rd will be torn up and grated during the week of May 19.  Area residents and other traffic will be allowed access but detoured through Paramount Dr. to avoid the construction area.  This is projected to be complete by the end of the week.

Three Retaining Walls at Ranger and SR 179

Crews are simultaneously working on three retaining walls in the vicinity of SR 179 and Ranger Road. The first is in front of the Sedona Motel, the second is along Ranger Road, and the third is adjacent to the Tlaquepaque parking lot.

Ongoing Work

SR 89A Reduced to One Lane Each Direction as Needed

SR 89A is reduced to one lane in each direction as needed to allow for a construction zone in the area of Brewer Road near the Coldwell Banker and Burger King.  The work, occurring behind the curb line, includes the placement of electrical wiring for the roundabout lighting, construction of retaining walls and eventually, the construction of the curb and gutter that will form the south side of the new Brewer Roundabout.

Underground Work in Business District

The installation of storm drain, manholes, catch basins, a new gas line, and other underground items is ongoing.  Crews will be working in the middle of the road in front of Tlaquepaque on the complex installation of necessary items to convey storm water and run it through a filtering system prior to being allowed into Oak Creek. Crews will be working along the west side of the road in front of Hozho and Garlands to install new gas, electrical, and telecommunication lines.  As always, two-way traffic and business access are maintained if construction activities allow.

Bridge Construction

Bridge construction is ongoing, and crews continue weekend work to keep pace with the schedule.

Paving South of Village

Pending material availability and weather, paving work continues south of the Village.

***Special Information on Using Turn Signals in Roundabouts***

Advanced signaling before arriving to a roundabout is a recommendation, not a requirement. The only requirement is to YIELD where the YIELD sign is, which is when you enter the roundabout. The requirements for signaling are no different at a roundabout than any other intersection.  MVD manual recommends signaling 100 ft before the intended movement.  Drivers should signal left if they are going to go left or make a U-turn. Drivers should signal right if they are going to make a right turn.  If a driver is going straight through, the driver would not need to signal.

Also, a Yield sign before a roundabout is the same as a Yield sign at any other type of intersection. One needs to Yield to traffic within the roundabout that is approaching from the left.  Signaling to exit roundabout can be done, but would have to be almost instantaneous with the movement since there is very little time and distance between roundabout exits.

ADOT is very pleased with how the roundabouts on SR 179 are operating. As drivers become more accustomed to roundabouts, and as ADOT continues its education efforts, we know the public will realize that all the same traffic rules still apply.

Please note: Changes to construction plans can happen frequently due to weather, equipment availability and personnel issues. We try to anticipate construction activities a week in advance but changes may occur. Intermittent lane closures, with short delays, may not always be known in advance.
