Welcome to the State Route (SR) 179 Project Weekly Construction Update - your electronic connection to the SR 179 Project with the most current information on construction plans and activities.
Please note: Changes to construction plans can happen frequently due to weather, equipment availability and personnel issues. We try to anticipate construction activities a week in advance but changes may occur. Intermittent lane closures, with short delays, may not always be known in advance.
What to watch for January 8-12:
(Construction activity information is organized from the southern most point of construction to the north.)
One lane of traffic continues to flow in each direction throughout the construction areas. Intermittent driveway closures will be necessary for the installation of drainage pipe, construction of curb, gutter, sidewalk and driveways. These closures will be minimized to the extent possible. Individual businesses will be given advance notice of these closures. As always, business access will be maintained. Watch for blue “business access” signs to guide you, and please drive with care through the area.
Construction of a retaining wall is ongoing south of the Village of Oak Creek where traffic has been shifted westward onto temporary pavement. Panels for the wall are partially in place. Color staining will be done at a later date. There may be minor traffic impacts such as shoulder closures or construction vehicles needing access to the road, or lane closures of short durations with flaggers/DPS present.
Drainage work between the new Ranger Station and Ridge Trail Drive is ongoing. There may be minor traffic impacts such as shoulder closures or construction vehicles needing access to the road, or lane closures with flaggers/DPS present.
Due to unforeseen utility conflicts, Jacks Canyon Road will be closed between SR 179 and Cortez until further notice.
Work for new bridge construction in the forest segment is ongoing near milepost 309.5. The foundations for HT Bridge are in place and in progress for the Bell Rock Bridge. There may be some flagger traffic control in this area to allow trucks in and out. The HT Trail will be closed until Spring 2007 due to the bridge construction.
Traffic at Back O Beyond will be shifted to the east side of the road in mid-January, so storm drain work can begin on the west side. Temporary concrete barriers will be installed to help traffic flow. There may be intermittent lane closures with flaggers/DPS present.
APS will begin utility relocation work for Project 2 in the Tlaquepaque area. Work will include the temporary installation of power poles to raise the power line over Oak Creek and make room for the new pedestrian bridge construction. Permanent power will be underground and cross the creek on the new pedestrian bridge. Arizona Water, Unisource, Qwest and the city will begin work in February.
